In a groundbreaking medical achievement at the national level, Dr. Mahmoud Tannash Al-Shatnawi — an ENT specialist and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Yarmouk University — successfully performed the first procedure of its kind in Jordan to remove middle ear cholesteatoma using endoscopic surgery. The operation was conducted at Princess Basma Teaching Hospital.
This pioneering surgery, the first of its kind across the Jordanian healthcare sector (public, private, and academic), was performed on a patient suffering from chronic middle ear infection and erosion of the auditory ossicles. Thanks to the precision of the technique and its rapid recovery benefits, the patient was discharged on the same day in stable condition.
Endoscopic ear surgery represents a significant advancement in otologic procedures, as it is performed through the natural ear canal without the need for external incisions. This minimizes complications and accelerates patient recovery.
This accomplishment reflects the commitment of the Faculty of Medicine at Yarmouk University to supplying the healthcare sector with highly qualified professionals capable of delivering transformative advances in medical care. It also highlights the university’s leading role in promoting research, innovation, and advanced clinical application.

As part of its efforts to promote the concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation within the academic environment, the Faculty of Medicine at Yarmouk University organized an introductory lecture about the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Yarmouk University. The event was attended by a number of faculty members and students from various academic years and was sponsored by the Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Jumana Al-Suleiman.
The lecture hosted Professor Dr. Omar Qamouh, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the university, who delivered a comprehensive presentation on the importance of entrepreneurial thinking in the medical field. He emphasized that innovation is no longer optional but a necessity to keep pace with rapid health developments and challenges.
During the session, Dr. Qamouh discussed the center’s operational mechanisms, outlining the services it provides, including technical support and specialized guidance, as well as training programs specifically designed to help students turn their ideas into viable projects. He also reviewed the application process to the center, from the idea stage to real-world implementation.
The lecture included interactive discussions and presentations of successful student projects that evolved from mere ideas into impactful entrepreneurial initiatives. These experiences added an atmosphere of enthusiasm and inspiration among the attendees and opened the door to questions about how to further develop entrepreneurial ideas within the faculty.
At the end of the session, the attendees expressed their appreciation for this initiative, which opens new horizons for students and supports their aspirations to combine medicine with innovation. This contributes to preparing a generation of doctors capable of making a positive impact on both the healthcare system and society at large.
