Faculty of Medicine - YU held a farewell ceremony for Prof. Wissam Shihadeh the ex-Dean on Wednsday Sept. 2nd, 2020. The ceremony was under the patronage of the President of Yarmouk University Prof. Zaydoon Kafafi. It was attended by the vice presidents and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine Dr. Khaldoon Bashaireh and the academic and the administrative staff

The celebration started with a speech by the Dean of the faculty of medicine , who welcomed the president , the vice presidents and the ex-Dean. He mentioned the achievements of the faculty since its establishment and though the period of the ex-Dean Dr. Shihadeh. then Dr. Bashaireh highlighted the aspirations of the faculty of medicine in the future till it becomes a prominent figure in the middle east. 

Prof. Kafafi, the president then gave a speech thanked Prof. Wissam for his work during his period  as a dean, and he welcomed Dr. Bashaireh in his new position. the president talked about the univeristy's hard work to establish the university hospital in the near future to be the place where our students get clinical training during their studies. 

Dr. Wissam thanked the President and his deputies , as well as the Dean and the academic and the administrative staff for this gesture of appreciation. He wished the faculty more and more of achievements in the future. 

Finally , The President delivered Prof. Shihadeh the shield of the university. Dr. Bashaireh as well delivered Dr. Shihadeh the shield of the faculty. 

Another medical activity was held by a group of medical students under the care of the Faculty of Medicine @ YU on Saturday Feb. 29th , 2020 in Arabella mall in Irbid.

This activity was supervised by Dr. Fatima Mahasneh , a faculty staff in the department of basic medical sciences. The medical student Mutaz Abu Dalou and his colleagues did their best to let this event be successful. 

The event included many awareness activities for all sectors of the society visiting the mall, One of them was to increase awareness about the risks of smoking on the smoker and people around him. Another was for the importance of screening for chronic medical illnesses like hypertension and diabetes. a third about the ways of self cleanliness. Children had their share in this event by many entertainment paragraphs.

Despite of their first time participation in the national medical competition supervised by the Jordan Medical Association, Faculty of Medicine @ Yarmouk University  students represented by the students Abrar Ramadan (6th yr student), Ahmad Al Omari ( 5th yr student) and Maria Obeidat ( 4th yr student) shined in the 5th copy of this competition held on Saturday February 1st, 2020. The team lead the race through the first step onward and till the last question. They managed to rank the third among all medical schools of Jordan ( total of six universities) with so close comparable grades with the first two teams.

The team was the center of attention of the attendees and its performance was highly appreciated by the members of the organizing committee. 

The board of trustees of Yarmouk university decided at their meeting held on August 22nd, 2020 to approve the new academic formations set by Prof. Zaydoon Kafafi , the prseident of Yarmouk University.  One of which is the assignment of Dr. Khaldoon Bashaireh as the Acting  Dean of faculty of medicine - YU. 

Dr. Khaldoon is an associate professor in faculty of medicine, Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), He graduated from faculty of Medicine @ JUST , then finished his studies in Orthopedic surgery in Germany. and he has subspecialties in knee surgery by arthroscope and reconstruction.

The family of Faculty of medicine- YU congratulates Dr. Bashaireh and wishes him the best in his new position and his career , working hand by hand with him.

As well the family of faculty medicine thanks Prof. Wissam Shehadeh, the leaving dean for his efforts and success story during his priod. wishing him the best in the future.

A seminar about the new corona virus was held this week by faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Medicine under the patronage of the dean of faculty of sciences Prof. Nihad Al Yousef, The seminar was titled “ New Coronavirus between truth and illusion”.

The speakers were Prof. Khalid AlQaood, a staff member in Biology department in Faculty of sciences, Dr. Waleed AlMomani, Head of basic medical sciences in Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Sahem Gharaibeh, a pulmonary medicine consultant and staff member in department of clinical medical sciences. The first speaker Dr. AlQaood talked about the rumors that accompanied the surge of the virus in different classical media and internet social media. 

Dr. Almomani gave a lecture about history of different corona viruses strains like SARS and MERS till the recent surge of New Coronavirus.

Finally, Dr. Gharaibeh talked about the clinical aspects of the disease associated with this viral infection and WHO recommendations about isolation of the infected and suspected patients, as well as the simple ways for the prophylaxis and protection against the infection with the new Coronavirus.

After the lectures, the audience engaged in a fruitful discussion with the lecturers about this hot health issue.

The combined team of Faculty of Medicine& Hijjawi engineering ranked second in the university Basketball League after qualifying to the final match. The team won the semi final match against the Chinese students team. The final match took place on Thursday Dec. 12th, 2019 between our team and the faculty of sports team in the university Gym. hall.

The match was full of enthusiasm and parity between the two teams, Medicine-Hijjawi team was leading the match till the end of the third quarter thanks to the 3rd year medical student "Mahmoud Shawkat Abouini" who finished the match with personal points of 27, but the Faculty of sports team gnashed its teeth in the last quarter and turned the result in the last few minutes and won over our team by 60-54.   It is worth mentioning that this is the first season for Faculty of medicine to participate in this annual league.

The season of Soul Batch graduation, the second batch of medical students to be graduated in Summer 2020 started on Sunday March 1st, 2020 by the opening ceremony of graduation notebooks party. The ceremony was under the patronage of the Dean of Faculty of Medicine Prof. Wisam Shihadeh, in the presence of his Deputy Dean, Prof. Zain Al Abideen Al Abdullah, the dean assistants, group of the teaching and administrative staff of the faculty. All gathered to celebrate the attending Soul Batch students with their fellows of next batches. 

The celebration started by cutting the opening ribbon then taking the commemorative photos, then One of Soul batch students gave a welcome speech. After that the crowd went through the sections of the sponsoring companies and the graduation notebooks.

The hall will be open in the next few weeks to receive the friends, colleagues and the teachers of the students who intend to write their comments on the notebooks.

Yarmouk University is represented now through the Faculty of Medicine in Jordanian board exam committtees of many medical specialties. The Jordanian board exam which is organised by Jordan Medical Council is a prerequisite to practice the specialty in Jordan and many other countries. Candidates apply to it after finishing the years required for training in the specialty. 

Faculty of Medicine is represented in five specialty committees as follows:

- Prof. Wisam Shihadeh, Dean. in the Ophthalmology commitee

-Dr. Hussam Barakat in Gastroenterology and Hepatology committee

-Dr. Mohammad Akram Awwad in Orthopedic Surgery committee

-Dr. Khalid Seetan in Dermatology committee

-Dr. Nisreen Bataineh in Pathology committee

It's worth noting that Jordanian board exam and Jordan Medical Council certificate in all specialties are well respected and recognized to practice medicine not only in Jordan but in many neighboring countries. A good number of candidates from Arab countries apply to those exams every time it is held.

Dr. Hasan Al Balas the "Ear, Nose and Throat- ENT" surgeon and the assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine- Yarmouk University has performed the first operation of ENT endoscopy in Princess Basma Teaching hospital after the administration of the hospital added this new equipment to the ENT operation room.

The manager of Princess Basma hospital, Dr. Mohammad Bani Yaseen praised this achievement as it is " the first time such operation is done in the hospital in this field after this scope was brought to service which will contribute to alleviate the suffering of the patients and help in their recovery".

This operation is one of the results of the cooperation agreement between the ministry of health in Jordan and Yarmouk university represented by the faculty of Medicine.
