Faculty of Medicine held a major activity on Thuersday Oct. 28th, 2021 within its participation with the world's month of awareness of breast cancer. The whole day was full of activities and events in collaboraion with King Hussein Medical Center (KHMC) and the national program for breast cancer.

The day started by an opening ceremony under the patronage of the YU President Prof. Islam Massad. The ceremony was opened with the royal anthem and reciting verses of Holy Quran by a medical student. then Dr. Asmaa Almnayyes, the Dean assistant for training and development and the toastmaster of the ceremony thanked the university president and the dean of faculty of Medicine Prof. Khaldoon Bashaireh for encouraging the faculty of Medicine activities and she greeted the manager of the national program for breast cancer Mrs. Reem Ajlouni.

Then she announced for the Dean's speech. Dr. Bashaireh thanked the YU president , KHMC and Mrs. Ajlouni for their support to let this awareness day succeed. He talked to the audience about the importance of the awareness of breast cancer in Jordan and the world as screening could detect the disease in its early stage to minimize life losses,major surgeries and expensive costs that are a burden on the patient's families and the health system.

 Prof. Bashaireh invited the YU president Prof. Massad to the platform. Prof. Massad stressed on the importance of such activities and awareness days for the benifit of the society. He showed the interest of the university to work hand by hand with all the governmental and civil society organizations to make the awareness missions a success. He hoped that this medical day will increase the awareness of breast cancer and its screening in Jordan.

Mrs. Reem Ajlouni, the manager of the national program then talked to the audience thanking them for attending and thanked Yarmouk University and Faculty of medicine for their efforts to increase the awareness of breast cancer. She valued the positive response of women in the last few years to the awareness programs, but she urged for more activities during the whole year not only October the month of pink ribbons, as the statistics show that almost 1200 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annulaly in Jordan, Unfortunately , most of them are in late stages.

A survivor lady then talked about her experience from the start when she was diagnosed to have breast cancer through her long treatment way till she was finally declared free of the disease. Her story touched the audience and inspired them to follow her advices to call every woman at risk to start screening.

    Memorial shields were exchanged between the University President and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine from one side and Mrs. Ajlouni in the other side.

Lectures then started. Dr. Ghaith Hailat, the assistant professor in General surgery and the oncology surgeon gave two lectures one to get the audience aquianted with the disease, its symptoms and some relevant statistics. and he gave another lecture about modes of treatment used to traet breast cancer and the importance of individualizing the treatment according to the findings in each patient.

 Dr Suha Beitawi, the assistant professor and Obstetrics and Gyencology consultant talked about the way of breast self screening. she called the ladies to learn and train for this in the training session that was held in the margin of this day in the skills lab in Faculty of Medicine campus under supervision of Dr. Beitawi.

 Dr. Asmaa Almnayyes , the assistant professor in Radiology presented a lecture about the radiological investigations used to diagnose breast cancer and the proper time and age to do mammogram to screen for the disease.

Dr. Nesreen Bataineh, the Dean assistant for accreditation and Quality Assurance , the assistant professor in pathology talked about the biobsy types and ways to take them for the diagnosis of the breast cancer.

Last, Dr. Laila Matalqa gave a lecture about the healthy style and the ways to minimize the controlled risk factors of breast cancer.

After the end of the lectures session, The audience visited the booths that were distributed in the university, where medical students answer the questions about breast cancer, they presented the prochures and the pink ribbons to the attendees. Ladies had their chance to train in the skills lab about the best way of self screening.

The  medical day continued till the sunset of Thursday, Afterwards the front of the faculty building was illuminated with pink color to pay the attention for this campaign for many nights till the end of the campaign in Jordan.

President of Yarmouk University Prof. Islam Massad and the Dean of Faculty of Medicine Prof. Khaldoun Bashaireh participated in a meeting held by the education and youth committee in the Jordanian Parliament headed by Dr. Bilal almomani and attended actively by the PM's the members of the committee. The meeting was held on Monday Oct. 25th, 2021. The committee's guests were the presidents of the Jordanian universities that include faculties of medicine within their campuses, the deans of Faculties of Medicine in Jordan , the deputy of ministry of higher education and scientific research, the head of Accreditation and the head of Quality Assurance Commision of Higher Education Institutions AQACHEI.

The main issue discussed in this meeting was the World Federation of Medical Education-WFME accreditation of faculties of Medicine in Jordan which is essential for the recognition of these faculties internationally and a prerquisite for acceptance of the graduates of the faculties of medicine in the residency programs in advanced countries like USA.   

 Ro'ya TV station inerviewd the dean of Faculty of Medicine @ YU Prof. Khaldoon Bashaireh who answered the host's questions about the vaccination against COVID19 campaign in Jordan. He talked about the international collaboration during the pandemic and about the reaction of Jordan to this crisis starting for equipping hospital of all what nneded to cope with the increasing cases, and the prevention lockdowns and finally the supply of vaccines aiming to control the infection as soon as the vaccines were recognozed scientifically and approved by WHO. 

He then talked about increasing awareness in the society of taking the vaccines after a period of misunderstanding of  the truth about vaccines, stating that the cooperation between the government, the active bodies of the people, the media and the health institutions in increasing this awareness till we reached this stage we live of people's initiative to take the vaccines.

About Jordan's situation comapred to the world regarding vaccination against COVID19, the Dean said that according to the numbers of MOH - Jordan: till yesterday, 5 million 800 thousand vaccines were given already which means about 25% of all who live in Jordan took two doses of the vaccine, a percentage close to the world's numbers that reach about 30%. This means that Jordan is in the right way.

When he was asked about the safety of the vaccines, Prof. Bashaireh talked about the differences in human bodies in response to medications and vaccines in general, and the differences about the preparations among the different vaccines, those factors play role in the side effects that we see sometimes from vaccine to vaccine. The fact that the world has vaccinated people more than 4.5 billion times with no major problem happened from any vaccine let us with confidence label them as safe. With the side effects as minimum as expected and easily treatable then  vaccines against COVID19 are safe as the other vaccines against other infections which are golbally accepted.

Dr. Bashaireh stressed on the positive attitude towards the vaccination, as he prefers to talk about this positive attitude rather than the absolute number of the population vaccinated to be safe. This positive attitude is really there in the society that we can see through the increasing awareness among people of the importance of vaccination and the increase in the medical efficiency in dealing with the corona cases, so we can notice the less negative results of the 2nd and 3rd waves of COVID when we compare them to the first wave.

He added that though vaccination protects alot from getting the disease, but even if the vaccinated person caught the disease, it will be milder and with less complications. But we have to be aware that we are not only aiming for the immunity of the person alone, but we are looking for the herd immunity and the saftey of public, so the anyone who gets the acquired immunity from catching the disease, this immunity's time is not long and is not the same for everyone, and here is the role of the vaccination again to increase this time of immunity as well as keeping up with the preventive measures like face masks and social distancing. we don't want an immunized person who could get infected wil mild symptoms infect others that could have the disease with more severe symptoms and complications.

Finally the Dean talked about the pioneering of the universities in Jordan in increasing the health awareness and opening the vaccination centers within their campuses. so their role was positive in the whole stage of COVID pandemic.

Ro'ya interview with the Dean

  The front of the Faculty of Medicine building was illuminated with pink color starting from Thursday Oct. 28th, 2021 in solidarity with the national awareness camapign of breast cancer. It will be kept illuminated every evening till the end of campaign. this step came in response to the directives of the university president Prof. Islam Massad and in conjuction with the participation of Faculty of Medicine in the national and international awareness campaign of breast cancer. 

The dean of Faculty of Medicine/YU Prof. Khaldoon Bashaireh stated that 'this step is just one of many steps and events the faculty did to participate in the campaign, and it is a way to attract the attention of the local society who pass by the building to know the importance of the screening of this disease which is a killer if discovered late and curable if discovered early.  Protection of our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters is the aim of these events'.

He added: 'The other events that were carried out by our teaching and admistrative staff and our medical students were the ceremony that was held under the patronage of the YU President that included many awareness lectures and a speech of a survivor that inspired the audience and touched their hearts. Another ativity was the teaching at booths where our students answered the question of the public about this disease and the prochures and the pink ribbons that were distributed, and finally the training session of self breast examination that was held in the skills lab in the faculty campus'.  

Faculty of Medicine- YU held a reception for the new first year medical students , enrolled for the acdemic year 2021-2022 in Al-Kendy hall-Faculty of Arts campus on Thursday 21st, 2021. The reception was under the patronage of the Dean of Faculty of Medicine Professor Khaldoon Bashaireh, It was attended by the the new students and a number of teaching and administrative staff. The reception started with the royal anthem followed by reciting verses of the Holy Quran by the student Majed Namarneh.

The student Emad Al-Zoubi, the toastmaster presented the speakers, first of whom was the Dean of Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Al-Bashaireh improvised a speech to the students, congratulated them for their enrollment to study medicine in Yarmouk University and stressed on taking the responsibility of being medical students and being a future doctors. He gave them some advices that will help them through their academic path and encouaged them to do their best to be safe and competent doctors.

Then, Dr. Laila Matalqa, the Dean Assistant for the students' affairs in basic sciences stage and E-learning talked to the students, congratulating them for their distinguished acheivement in high school and their enrollment in YU medical school. Dr. Matalqa talked about the imprtance of sticking to the rules of the university and the Faculty of Medicine and the reporting lines that will help them preserve their academic rights. She guided them about where they can find these information from personally or through the university literature and documents.

 This talk was followed by a speech given by the Dean Assistant of Accreditation and Quality Assurance Affairs, Dr. Nesreen Bataineh. She emphasized the rules and regulations regarding the academic path and requirments to get their MB.Bs. certificate includinfg the rules of transfer from every yeal level to the next level and the maximum years legally accepted to continue in our medical school till graduation. She talked about the students' guide and the importance on getting the correct information for registeration from this guide and not verbally from unauthorized people.

During the reception many videos were presented to the new comers telling them what and where they can find the important buildings in the university, the Faculty of Medicine campus tour and the awareness of public safety and health during the face-to-face tlearning process which is resumed starting from the first semester. Those safety measures are compatible with the regulations of national health coomitteee to control COVID19 in Jordan and as a positive respone to the defense laws set by the government regarding public health.  There were two other speeches by the students Forat Alomoush and Albaraa Bani Younes. Forat as a representative of the already-enrolled medical students welcomed his new fellows starting their academic steps this semester. and Albaraa as a representative of the new studens.

An instructional presentation for the curriculum and the Dress Code of the Faculty of Medicine was presented by the student Emad Alzoubi . Some encoraging song by the student Suhaib Beshtawi and entertaining paragraphs intersperced between the videos.

Then Dr. Mohammad Akram Awwad gave a presentation about what is important for the new students in the official electronic websites of the university and Faculty of Medicine and where to find the important announcements and news during browsing both sites. 

The final paragraph of the reception was a scientific competition for the new students. This reception was organised by a committee including a number of students and teaching staff. Saftey measures were taken into account during the ceremony.

The Dean sent a video message to Passion batch in their semi-virtual mini-graduation ceremonies on Thursday August 12th, 2021. This ceremony is an annual occasion celebrating the batch that finishes the basic sciences courses at the end of the third year and is about to start the clinical stage of their medical studies. Last year this ceremony was not held because of the restrictions set to control the pandemic. This year it was held but with the presence of the students in an open hall. The teaching and administrative staff sent their congratulations by video recordings. The Dean gave the students his advices of how to deal with patients and their families, the hospital staff and the clinical teachers. He congratulated them and wished them the best in their clinical life.

 The breast cancer awareness day activities will start tomorrow Thursday Oct. 28th, 2021. Faculty of Medicine/YU activities come within the national awareness month dedicated for breast cancer. The YU activities will start at 9:00 am in a ceremony under the patronage of the president of Yarmouk University Prof. Islam Massad. After the royal anthem Dr. Asmaa Al-Mnayyes , The dean assistant for training and development and the ceremony toastmaster will present the Dean of Faculty of Medicine Prof. Khaldoon Bashaireh to give his talk, then the president of YU will be invited to give his speech , then the national program manager of breast cancer will talk to the audience and finally a survivor of breast cancer will present her experience. Following the talks six breif awareness lectures will be given by a number of Faculty of Medicine staff specialized in gynecology, oncology, pathology, radiology and oncology.

The booths of awareness run by medical students will spread in the main areas of the university throughout the day to give advices, present prochures and answer questions regarding screening, symptoms and signs and management of breast cancer.  An awareness lecture about breast cancerwill be given at Yarmouk University Model School for the school students, and a training session for ladies to screen themselves personally (self screening) will be conducted in skills lab in the faculty of Medicine campus guided by our female gynecology doctors and female medical students. 

The Dean of Faculty of Medicine Dr. Bashaireh invites all students, teaching and administrative staff of the university to participate in this awareness day.

In collaboration with Yarmouk University, the Civil Defense Directorate held a primary exercise for civil defense activitiesin the Faculty of Medicine campus. This exercise was done yestewrday , Thursday Sept. 16th, 2021. Lieutenant Khalid Obeidat the exercise leader told the website that this exercise includes firefighting work in the case of ground floor fire or fire in the higher floors as well as treatment in cases of chemical and toxic substances leakage and the evacuations. 

Lieutenant Obeidat added that the main comprehensive exercise will be done amid the next week in a date that will be determined in the next few days. Tens of civil defense personnel participated in the primary exercise. Many vehicles with different puposes and ambulance vehicles were in the field during this exercise.

Faculty of Medicine @ YU participated in the activities of the conference titled (Training for medical Education via Innovative e-Technology ), that was held in Faculty of Medicine/ Jordan University in Amman between August 1st and August 12th, 2021 This conference was held in collaboration with ERASMUS + affiliated with Eropean Union , This Program has many projects that a number of Jordanian universities share in. 

Faculty of Medicine/ YU has a partnership with ERASMUS + in two projects; Meditech and iBMS.

Yarmouk University's particpation was through the workshops for teaching  the teaching staff and students, and by attending the conference lectures. Dr. Mazhar Alzoubi the Dean assistant and the associate professor in Basic Medical Sciences-BMS department gave two lectures talking about the faculty's experience in the projects it shared in. 

At the final ceremony the staff and students who particiapted in the workshops received their certificates.
