The Department of Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology encompasses several specialties organized into three divisions:

  • Division of Pediatrics
  • Division of Family Medicine
  • Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Below are the details regarding the courses and practical training offered in each division:

Division of Pediatrics

The Pediatrics course is offered to medical students as part of the curriculum during the fourth and sixth years of study. This division aims to prepare students to provide healthcare for children from birth to adolescence within the framework of general pediatrics. The curriculum covers essential topics such as neonatology, pediatric cardiology, respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and more. Students are equipped with the necessary knowledge to manage a wide range of conditions and disorders that may affect children's health, with an emphasis on preventive vaccination programs, growth and development monitoring, and the ability to diagnose and treat complex and critical cases.

The department collaborates with several accredited hospitals to provide practical training for students within the Pediatrics courses. Students gain hands-on experience by working with real clinical cases. They are distributed across hospitals operated by the Jordanian Ministry of Health, including the Princess Rahma Educational Hospital for Children, the Pediatrics Departments at Al-Ramtha Hospital, Yarmouk Government Hospital, and the Maternity and Children Hospital in Mafraq Governorate. Additionally, the Royal Medical Services offers students the opportunity to train at military hospitals, including Prince Rashid Military Hospital and King Hussein Medical City.

Division of Family Medicine

The fifth-year curriculum includes a course titled "Family Medicine and Primary Health Care," which aims to prepare students to provide comprehensive and integrated primary health care for individuals and families in the community across all age groups. This division seeks to offer medical education and practical training in a manner that enhances students' skills in delivering holistic care to all family members.

The course emphasizes equipping students with knowledge in disease prevention, early diagnosis, and health promotion, alongside a solid understanding of treatment and management for a variety of medical conditions, including chronic disease management. Practical training takes place in comprehensive health centers operated by the Jordanian Ministry of Health, such as the Al-Husn Comprehensive Health Center, Al-Ramtha Comprehensive Health Center, and Al-Sarih Comprehensive Health Center, among others. This hands-on experience ensures that students are well-prepared to provide optimal health care in various circumstances.

Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology aims to train students to provide comprehensive and exceptional medical care for women at all stages of their lives. The division offers an advanced academic program that covers various aspects of women's health, including care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, as well as addressing other gynecological conditions up to menopause. Preventive measures and early diagnosis of certain gynecological diseases are among the key topics highlighted in this course.

This course is provided to students during their fifth and sixth years of study. In the fifth year, the focus is on developing communication skills, clinical examination techniques, and analytical thinking to arrive at accurate medical diagnoses. In the sixth year, these skills are reinforced, with an additional emphasis on available treatment methods. The curriculum also includes training on the fundamentals of managing emergency situations in obstetrics and gynecology that a general practitioner may encounter.

Through clinical training at various hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health and the Royal Medical Services, students gain extensive exposure to a diverse range of medical cases, enriching their educational experience. This training helps develop their clinical reasoning and decision-making skills through direct interaction with patients under the supervision of specialized physicians, preparing them to face medical challenges in their professional careers. Hospitals involved include: from the Ministry of Health: Princess Badi’a Educational Hospital, Al-Ramtha Hospital, Mafraq Hospital for Women and Children, and Jerash Hospital. From the Royal Medical Services: Prince Rashid Military Hospital, Princess Haya Hospital, and King Hussein Medical City.

Clinical Skills Laboratory and Simulation Hospital

The Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology features an active Clinical Skills Laboratory and Simulation Hospital. Fifth-year students receive training on how to perform clinical examinations using mannequins, including assessments for pregnant women and gynecological internal examinations. Sixth-year students train on mannequins to practice normal deliveries and managing patients in cases of postpartum hemorrhage. The department aims to enhance the Simulation Hospital's role by expanding training on various medical cases in the near future to include the Pediatrics and Family Medicine divisions, in addition to further developing its use within Obstetrics and Gynecology.
