A workshop about using Open access data in medical research by Dr. saif Ad-deen Riyalat

Under the auspices of Prof. Manar Al-Lawama , the Dean a workshop titled : "Open access data source in medicine: the hidden treasure  "

delivered by Dr. Saif Ad-Deen Al-Riyalat, an ophthalmologist and a distinguished researcher, ranked among the top 2% of the most cited researchers in the world, and who holds a medical patent.

The workshop talked about the medical data available for use in research with in an open access, where the researchers from any specialty could use by applying his new vision to the available information and conduct distinguished research without the need to collect new data. The importance of this data lies in the fact that it was collected from a large number of patients over long periods of time and stored in the form of databases that are freely available to researchers from all over the world.

Dr. Al-Riyalat showed the advantages of using such medical databases, like the  ease of access to them, in addition to the excellent quality of some data, which is sometimes difficult for the researcher to collect by his own effort or obtaining these data could be beyond the institution’s ability.  In addition to the availability of a large sample whose information were collected for a long period of time, which saves time and effort for the researcher in collecting samples and ensuring their quality, and he also pointed to some of the challenges associated with this type of database, such as finding appropriate data for the subject of research and the time required to prepare this data and prepare it for statistical analysis, especially if it is of low quality.

Dr. Al-Riyalat stressed on the importance of scientific research for students of the Faculty of Medicine and its impact on raising the status of the medical school and the university regionally and internationally.

The workshop was held on Tuesday Jan. 17th, 2023. It was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Manar Al-Lawama, and a good number of faculty and administrative staff and students in the Faculty of Medicine.
