An awareness day was held today Sunday August 28th, 2022 on the campus of the Faculty of Medicine which coincides with the international celebration of World Breastfeeding Week

In this activity an educational lecture on the importance of breastfeeding was given. This comes as part of the Faculty’s participation in the celebration of the World Breastfeeding Week, in cooperation with the Breastfeeding Support Association in Jordan, and coordinated by Dr. Jomana Al-Sulaiman, a specialist in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Clinical Medical Sciences, and Dr. Asmaa Al-Munayes, Dean Assistant for clinical training education and development.

At the beginning of the activity, Dr. Jomana Al-Sulaiman said that “the world's celebration of breastfeeding in August aims to shed light on the importance of breastfeeding for children and mothers, and to educate the medical and community circles about what they can do to help consolidate this important endeavor”.

Dr. Rawan Al-Atoum, an international breastfeeding consultant, reviewed in her lecture the components of mother’s milk and its benefits for the infant, indicating that mother’s milk consists of elements that are not present in formula milk, the most important of which are anti-inflammatory substances, digestive enzymes and a number of growth factors. Al-Atoum emphasized the benefits of breast milk for infants, including increasing immunity, reducing the incidence of lung and intestinal infections and middle ear infections, and reducing the risk of obesity in children, in addition to the benefits for the nursing mother. Dr. Al-Atoum discussed also many other axes, most notably the common reasons that hinder the breastfeeding, and the appropriate solutions for it.
