Within the interest of the Faculty of Medicine at Yarmouk University to communicate with graduates and to maintain communication between graduates and their fellow students, the Faculty of Medicine, in cooperation with the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA) - Yarmouk University, prepared an integrated project on (life after graduation) and the first of which was a lecture entitled “Requirements for obtaining admission in Residency Programs in USA. Three of the FM/YU graduates participated in presenting its paragraphs, and the keynote speaker was Dr. Mohammad Al-Momani, a graduate of the first batch of the Faculty of Medicine at Yarmouk University, who completed the requirements of the specialty in America and obtained a residency in the specialty of Neurology, which is one of the competitive specialties in the United States of America. Dr. Almothanna Manasreh and Dr. Baraa' Abu Ata as well gave the students some important notes during the activity.The lecture was held at 12 noon on Thursday 28-7-2022 in the auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine - Blue Hall. It lasted for three hours, including a break.
The event was under the auspices of Prof. Zain Al Abidin Abdullah, Vice Dean of the FM/YU, in the presence of Prof. Mazhar Al-Zoubi, Assistant Dean for Alumni Affairs and International Relations, and Dr. Nisreen Bataineh, Assistant Dean for Accreditation and Quality Assurance, a number of teaching faculty members, and a crowd of students of different academic years at the Faculty of Medicine.
The lecture began with a presentation by Dr. Mazhar Al-Zoubi for the lecture’s program and the lecturers. Then he gave the floor to the Vice Dean to deliver the Dean's speech, in which Prof. Zain Al-Abidin welcomed his daughters and sons, FM/YU graduates and students, and stressed on the importance of continuous communication between the Faculty and the Alumni, and between the students and Alumni with the help and support of their mother college. He continued: ‘Our Faculty is proud of the successes of its graduates in practical life after graduation. And that the Faculty's keenness to continue, consolidate and develop success, necessitated the establishment of this guidance program on (the life after graduation for a Yarmouk medical student) to guide her/him to the various fields of specialization inside and outside Jordan. As the program begins with introducing the specialization in America to our students, it will continue in upcoming lectures to cover specialization in Britain, Germany, Qatar and other countries that give the chance our students to specialize in their institutes."
Then Dr. Mohammad Al-Momani started his lecture by talking about the exams that qualify the student to obtain a license to practice training in the United States (ECFMG certificate) and enumerated them, highlighting all the details about the nature of these exams, starting with the USMLE step 1 exam and then the USMLE step 2 CK exam, and then talking about where these exams are held, their times, how they are held in detail, their costs, the books that are recommended to study for each of these exams, the changes that occurred in some exams and their alternatives, such as the USMLE 2 CS exam, which was stopped after the COVID 19 pandemic and was replaced by the OET exam that Dr. Muthanna Manasra talked about in details. At the end of the first paragraph, a detailed talk about the third part of the USMLE3 exam was given.Then, after the break, Dr. Al-Momani spoke about how to apply for the (Match Program) to match the choices of specialties and institutes that the student is candidate for, and about how to register electronically, the procedures for reconciling the options, the results, and what it costs to register in the program.
The talk was not only informative, but rather interactive with the students who were asking their questions about every detail and every point that needed an answer from Dr. Momani and his colleagues, who provided everyone with their own experiences to apply and succeed in these exams. The lecture was useful for the students who thanked their fellow graduates for the valuable information.
