In a groundbreaking medical achievement at the national level, Dr. Mahmoud Tannash Al-Shatnawi — an ENT specialist and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Yarmouk University — successfully performed the first procedure of its kind in Jordan to remove middle ear cholesteatoma using endoscopic surgery. The operation was conducted at Princess Basma Teaching Hospital.
This pioneering surgery, the first of its kind across the Jordanian healthcare sector (public, private, and academic), was performed on a patient suffering from chronic middle ear infection and erosion of the auditory ossicles. Thanks to the precision of the technique and its rapid recovery benefits, the patient was discharged on the same day in stable condition.
Endoscopic ear surgery represents a significant advancement in otologic procedures, as it is performed through the natural ear canal without the need for external incisions. This minimizes complications and accelerates patient recovery.
This accomplishment reflects the commitment of the Faculty of Medicine at Yarmouk University to supplying the healthcare sector with highly qualified professionals capable of delivering transformative advances in medical care. It also highlights the university’s leading role in promoting research, innovation, and advanced clinical application.
